Don Mills Flood Reduction EA
The Don Mills Channel is a modified watercourse comprised mostly of commercial and light industrial development with some residential areas. The channel, which is in the City of Markham and west of Highway 404, is approximately 3km in length with its headwater starting south of Steeles Avenue East. Existing properties and businesses in the study area have been impacted by frequent flooding from the channel as well as from the drainage systems that carry storm runoff to the channel.
Scope of Services
TMIG was retained to identify the alternatives that are available in reducing flood risk and flood damages within the study area and determine, through a public consultation process, which alternative is preferred. The evaluation is based on the natural, social, and economic environment associated with the study area. The study is also intended to identify ancillary benefits to the project, including environmental improvements to the existing watercourse and intensification opportunities. It will also establish the funding, approvals, and other activities needed for the implementation of the recommended works.
The preliminary preferred solution involves replacement of critical undersized culverts and construction of a semi online flood control facility near the upstream end of the system.
