Back in October 2017, 10 members of TMIG came together for the first Diversity & Inclusion Committee meeting with the aim of influencing and driving the company’s diversity and inclusion agenda forward and facilitating the professional and personal growth of our employees by offering networking and career development opportunities.
The Committee meets quarterly to discuss topics about at-risk and equity-seeking groups, including Indigenous inclusion, LGBTQ+ inclusion and self-identification, persons with disabilities, episodic disabilities, mental illness, flexible work environments, general inclusion, and minority inclusion. Members of the committee find a safe space in these meetings during which they can discuss their own personal experiences and brainstorm ideas about how we can keep TMIG as diverse and inclusive as possible, from our hiring practices to our internal and external events.
To help educate employees and foster awareness of D&I issues, the Committee posts monthly calendars in common areas at both offices to showcase the various holidays that people of different cultural and religious backgrounds may observe. There is also a D&I board where the Committee posts fun trivia questions to keep our staff engaged and educated.
In February, we honoured Black History Month with a variety of trivia questions related to music, celebrities, famous quotes, and accomplishments within black culture. Test your knowledge with those questions below!
March was been devoted to honouring women, with team members sharing tidbits about females who inspire them most. These small efforts have made a significant impact on our workplace culture, bringing us together in a place of understanding and opening up conversations amongst those we see on a daily basis.
Notable events in March included the Ontario Public Works Associations International Women’s Day Seminar. CEO Dale Dionne, Municipal Services Director Nathalie McCutcheon, and Senior Project Manager Angela Carley were among the TMIG attendees for the 2018 event, with the theme of #PressForProgress.
TMIG is already a great place to work, but with the establishment of this Committee, we have become even better. We hope to attract top new talent to join our team and help ensure everyone in the TMIG family comes to work each day knowing they are valued and accepted. It is our varied experiences that make us strong.
